Discover the unique eco-system of Venice Lagoon
Designed by Matteo Gabbrielli
Venice is one of the world’s most iconic places: who hasn’t marvelled at images of its islands, palaces, canals, churches and gondolas? And yet much less is known about the region’s intricate ecosystem. The fragile environment of the Venice Lagoon helped create the immense wealth of La Serenissima, as the city is famously known. This delicate balance requires the awareness and understanding of all its visitors if they are to respect and have a positive influence on the region. Spend a weekend discovering the lagoon, learn about the “barene” and enter the canals to admire the natural wonder on which Venice was built.
DAY BY DAY
DAY 1 – Friday
Arrival at Santa Lucia train station where our expert guide will meet you. Transfer by private boat to Corte di Gabriela.
Check-in and dinner.
DAY 2 – Saturday
Breakfast at the hotel and meet the expert for a boat ride. Plunge into the city’s history with a visit to its very origins –the Island of Torcello. Now a quiet backwater, Torcello was once a thriving lagoon settlement and the heart of the first Venetian civilisation. The glittering medieval mosaics inside the ancient church of Santa Maria Assunta evoke the richness and importance of Torcello’s history.
The Lazzaretto islands are key to understanding the city’s power. It was here that Venetians invented the quarantine to protect the city’s trade – and themselves – from the plague. Thanks to that trade, Venice reigned as the greatest city of the Mediterranean for centuries.
Lunch in Murano
Return to Cannaregio, the city’s most populous area. This is where the locals enjoy La Serenissima, where the first Ghetto was created and where for centuries the working classes lived and set out each morning to build Venice’s magnificent palaces.
Dinner at leisure.
DAY 3 – Sunday
Guided walk of the city centre to discover the hidden treasures of Venice.
Farewell lunch and transfer to station for departure.

MATTEO GABBRIELLI
Venice Expert
Matteo has a BA in Cultural Heritage Management and an MA in Archeology, both at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. His main fields of specialization are Medieval Archaeology and Islamic Archaeology. The time he spent studying and working abroad gave him the chance to enhance my knowledge of the English and Spanish languages, and also to learn the basics of Arabic. He is an expert guide in Venice. His favourite topic is the long-standing link between Venice and the Orient. From the majesty of St. Mark’s Basilica to the shape of the Doge‘s hat, from the curves of Byzantine arches to the taste of sarde in saor (Venetian sardines), the influence of eastern culture – first Byzantine, then Arabic and Turkish – pervades the alleys and squares of this city.
