Jews in Milan

The Jewish community has been an integral part of the history of our country for over 2000 years. The ghettos have been the meeting point of Judaism in its various expressions for centuries. For the Italian Jewish community, Milan is an anomaly, but yet, no other Italian city owes as much to the Jews for defining its economic, social, and cultural identity.

Starting from the Central Synagogue in the heart of the city, we will look for the Jewish traditions that are still alive. We will visit precious Hebrew manuscripts and the Shoah Memorial at Central Station as well as the Jewish section at Monumental Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale). To get a taste of contemporary Jewish life in the Milanese community, we will visit a local neighbourhood with kosher restaurants and shops and the headquarters of the Jewish Community with its school and most frequented synagogues.
