Love of flight

From the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus to Leonardo da Vinci to the Wright brothers, flight has always been one of the greatest aspirations of humankind. This itinerary is designed to explore the adventures of the aviation pioneers who have left their mark on the last century. Italy is no stranger to scientific leadership in the aerostatic field: Milan and Lombardy have long-since played a key role in the development of flight, in the aeronautics industry, and in aeronautical research, thanks to the International Exhibition of 1906, dedicated to transport.

A visit to the Museum of Science and Technology (Museo nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia 'Leonardo da Vinci‘) in Milan offers the opportunity to investigate two of the most interesting personalities in this field: Leonardo da Vinci and Enrico Forlanini. While they hail from different eras, they share the same foresight. We then continue to the Varese province, home of some of the leading aeronautics industries in the world, and deserving of the title ‘the province of flight’. Here, two museums will transport us to the world of Italian aviation, as we enjoy their pavilions and flight simulators, and feel, at least for a day, like intrepid pilots.
