The contemporary art galleries
From the nineteenth century on, the art merchant abandoned his role as a seller, often door-to-door, of works of art and started to choose his favourite artists to show exclusively in permanent exhibitions locally. Art galleries therefore become a place for meeting and cultural exchange between artists, collectors and critics, mediated by the presence of the host: the gallerist. In Brera-Garibaldi, Porta Venezia and Lambrate-Ventura, we will visit various nuclei of contemporary art galleries with ongoing exhibitions, putting the artist in question into today’s context and the special relationship with each gallerist.
